Why We’re So Picky About What We Sell

There are millions of products we could put on GivMoo. We don’t want millions of products. We want the right products.

From everyday household essentials to apparel, accessories, gifts, and products created specifically for the nonprofit organizations in our marketplace, we spend a surprising amount of time thinking about what belongs on GivMoo and what doesn’t.

Why? Because when 100% of the retail profits from a purchase go back to nonprofit organizations, the product itself still has to be worth buying. A great cause shouldn’t be an excuse for a mediocre product.

Here are three reasons we pay so much attention to what makes it into the marketplace.

1. We Want You to Buy Something Because You Actually Want It

Giving back is an important part of the GivMoo Experience®, but it shouldn’t be the only reason you make a purchase. We want you to find things you would happily buy anyway. That might mean discovering practical products that make your everyday routines a little easier, finding a gift for someone you love, or grabbing something simple like an [embroidered everyday hat] Vala Heart Foundation Embroidered Dad Cap that also supports an organization doing meaningful work.

Our goal is not to ask shoppers to choose between something they want and something that does good. We think you should be able to have both.

2. The Products Have to Fit Into Real Life

One of our biggest considerations when choosing products is remarkably simple: Will people actually use this?

That question influences more of our product decisions than you might think. Sometimes the answer is a household product you already purchase. Sometimes it is a reusable or more sustainable alternative to something you use every day. Sometimes it is apparel, a small accessory, or even a 25 oz reusable water bottle that fits easily into workdays, workouts, rehearsals, travel, and everyday life while supporting Capital Cabaret and the performing arts. We are also continually exploring products that make everyday routines more thoughtful, including reusable laundry products, plastic-free kitchen products, concentrated cleaners, and other sustainable alternatives.

We believe giving back becomes much more powerful when it becomes part of something you were already going to do.

You needed laundry supplies anyway.

You needed a birthday gift anyway.

You wanted a new shirt anyway.

If an ordinary purchase can also create funding for a nonprofit, that’s where things start to get interesting.

3. Every Product Represents More Than GivMoo

This may be the most important reason we’re so particular. Every product on GivMoo represents the nonprofit organization benefiting from its sale. That matters.

Nonprofits on GivMoo don’t have to warehouse products, manage fulfillment, operate an ecommerce department, or take on the financial risk of purchasing inventory upfront. For many products, we use an on-demand model so an item is produced after a customer orders it, which can reduce unnecessary inventory and make it easier for organizations to offer merchandise without taking on the operational burden themselves.

That means our team has a responsibility to think beyond whether something can simply be listed for sale. We have to think about quality, usefulness, price, presentation, customer experience, fulfillment, and whether the product feels right for the organization it supports. Because when you receive a GivMoo order, you aren’t separating the product from the cause behind it. Neither are we.

Products With a Little More Purpose

We’ll never claim that every product on GivMoo will be perfect for every person. That would be impossible. What we can promise is that we’re thinking carefully about what we offer, why we offer it, and how it fits into the bigger reason GivMoo exists. We want shopping here to feel familiar, useful, fun, and maybe just a little better knowing where the profits from your purchase are going.

So take a look around.

Explore the marketplace, discover organizations doing work you care about, read a few stories from behind the scenes, or simply see if you can find something you were planning to buy anyway.

That’s kind of the whole idea.
