How Sneakers are Helping Girls Grow Strong, Smart and Bold

A pair of sneakers. A new sweatshirt. A backpack. A few accessories.

They are ordinary things families buy every day. But when those same purchases are made through GivMoo, they can help support something much bigger: organizations across America that are investing in young people, building confidence, providing mentorship and creating places where kids can grow. One of those organizations is Girls Inc. of Kingsport, in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Girls Inc. of Kingsport works with girls ages 4 through 18 and centers its work around a simple but powerful goal: inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. What stands out about their work is that much of it happens through the kinds of everyday moments that can be easy to overlook.

Big Impact Is Often Built in Small Moments

Mentoring a young person does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like helping with homework after school. Sometimes it is sitting down with a girl who needs someone to listen. Sometimes it is encouraging her to try something she has never done before. And, sometimes it is giving her a safe place to spend the afternoon, eat a snack, read a book, make friends and simply be herself.

Girls Inc. of Kingsport’s after-school program serves girls ages 4 to 18 from Kingsport City and Sullivan County Schools. Their weekday programming includes transportation from school, snacks, homework assistance, access to an in-house library, free activity time and Girls Inc. National Programs. Girls can also participate in opportunities such as mentoring, Girlbotics Lego League, therapeutic horseback riding and community service activities.

Each one of those things may seem small on its own. Together, they help build a young person.

Strong. Smart. Bold.

Girls Inc. programming goes well beyond simply providing somewhere to go after school. The organization offers programs that touch many different parts of a girl’s development, including economic literacy, leadership and community action, media literacy, STEM through Operation SMART, literacy, physical activity and health and wellness.

Their Mind+Body Initiative, for example, focuses on nutrition, physical activity, stress management and body image, helping girls develop the knowledge and skills to take an active role in their own physical, mental and emotional well-being. That kind of support matters because growing up is not one big moment.

  • Confidence is built over time.
  • Leadership is practiced.
  • Curiosity is encouraged.
  • Resilience develops through experience.

And often, what a young person remembers most is that there was an adult who consistently showed up, believed in her and gave her room to discover what she was capable of. That is everyday mentoring and it can have an extraordinary impact.

From One Building to a Larger Community

Girls Inc. of Kingsport also takes its programming beyond its own facility. Through its outreach program, trained facilitators can bring Girls Inc. National Programs directly into schools throughout Kingsport City, Sullivan County, Hawkins County and neighboring Scott County, Virginia. That means the impact is not limited to the girls who walk through one set of doors. It reaches classrooms, schools and communities and this is exactly why supporting youth organizations matters.

What Do Shoes Have to Do With Any of This?

Quite a lot, actually. Families already buy children’s shoes. They already replace outgrown sweatshirts. They already need backpacks, bags, accessories, school supplies and everyday clothing. Those purchases are part of raising kids. At GivMoo, we believe those ordinary transactions can also become part of supporting them.

When youth shoes, apparel, accessories and other everyday products are purchased through GivMoo, the retail profits from those purchases can support nonprofit organizations, including youth-focused partners like Girls Inc. of Kingsport.

The customer still gets something they needed or wanted, but the purchase has the opportunity to travel further.

  • A pair of sneakers can become part of the revenue that helps an organization keep its doors open after school.
  • A backpack can help support programming.
  • A sweatshirt can become part of a much larger investment in mentorship, confidence, education and opportunity.

That is the idea behind Everyday Things, Greater Purpose. We do not believe supporting communities should always require people to add one more thing to their lives. Sometimes it can begin with simply changing where we buy the things we already need, because a product is just a product. What gives it greater purpose is what we choose to build around it and at Girls Inc. of Kingsport, that purpose is being built every day, one girl, one mentor and one ordinary moment at a time.
